Paths under the Shade

In the following hadith, the messenger of Allah may peace be upon him narrated the seven categories of Muslim that will be given shelter by Allah The Most Merciful.

There are seven whom Allah will shade in His Shade on the Day when there is no shade except His Shade: a just ruler; a youth who grew up in the worship of Allah, The Mighty and Majestic; a man whose heart is attached to the mosques; two men who love each other for Allah’s sake, meeting for that and parting upon that; a man who is called by a woman of beauty and position [for illegal intercourse], but be says: ’I fear Allah’; a man who gives in charity and hides it, such that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives in charity; and a man who remembered Allah in private and so his eyes shed tears. [Narrated by Abu Hurairah, collected in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim]

The importance of young generation is shown in the Arab spring. We can see that youth incomprehension of international world has become an unprecedented mobilization. Unlike in many Western countries in general, Muslim youth are not looked as a problem population, they are the future of Islam. It is not surprising that Allah The Perfectly Wise gives preferences to righteous young as equal to a just ruler. The impact that can be created by Muslim youth can shake the establishment. [M. A. Bamyeh, Contemporary Sociology: A Journal of Reviews January 2012 vol. 41 no. 1 85-87]

We need youth to complete the succession of Islam through generations. We must fulfill our role to complete the circle. Good young generation is needed, because they are able to talk to people on their level. Young generation is the one who can adapt and utilize the newest technology to convey the message of Islam. Lets utilize our youth to please our Lord.

(Remember) the Day when the Shin shall be laid bare (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) and they shall be called to prostrate themselves (to Allah), but they (hypocrites) shall not be able to do so. Their eyes will be cast down and ignominy will cover them; they used to be called to prostrate themselves (offer prayers), while they were healthy and good (in the life of the world, but they did not). Then leave Me Alone with such as belie this Qur’an. We shall punish them gradually from directions they perceive not. [Q.S. Al-Qalam: 42-44]

Can we be one of the youth who is blessed by our Lord?

We, young generation tend to get too proud. Contemporary Muslim youth no longer seek a traditional path. Youth tend to assemble information from any available sources, proactively seeking connections and meanings. Unfortunately, not by going to Qur’an or listening to religious authorities. The behavior of young generation fluctuates all the time. It is easy to find young generation to be on the extreme side of introverts and extroverts.

Introversion is defined as an ”attitude-type characterised by orientation in life through subjective psychic contents” (focus on one’s inner psychic activity), and extraversion is defined as ”an attitude type characterised by concentration of interest on the external object”, (the outside world). [Jung, Carl (1995). Memories, Dreams, Reflections. London: Fontana Press]

Personalities are a dominant factor that affects young generation. Youth is the time where personalities show its peak influence. An extrovert may gets his satisfaction when he can be influenced in the organization. While an introvert may get his satisfaction when he is prostrating, crying because of Allah.

Does this means is it easier for an introvert to be granted the preference to be loved by Allah The Ultimate Loving?

Lets rearrange the seven categories referred in the hadith:

  1. A man who remembered Allah in private and so his eyes shed tears;
  2. A man who gives in charity and hides it, such that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives in charity;
  3. Two men who love each other for Allah’s sake, meeting for that and parting upon that;
  4. A just ruler;
  5. A youth who grew up in the worship of Allah, The Mighty and Majestic;
  6. A man whose heart attached to the mosque;
  7. A man who is called by a woman of beauty and position, but be says: ’I fear Allah’.

It is clear that categories no. 1-2 is easier to achieve by the introverts. On the other hand isn’t no. 3-4 refer to the extrovert. Isn’t Allah The All-Knowing extends the chance to get His shade for an extrovert youth, who desire to be in the midst of the movement of the society, to be the leader of the generation.

While no. 5-7 is referring to the spiritual condition of one’s heart which show his iman. Growing up as a Muslim is a big test, so many temptations and relentless trial. Its a war between you as a Muslim and the lust whispered by that sneaky shaytan. It is a struggle but there is light at the end of the tunnel. The light of islam.

Young generations, be ambitious! Don’t give up. Find the best path that match your characteristic, and strive to achieve the best for your future in this world and in the hereafter. Others may find their blessing in their own way, but that don’t forget your pace. You are loved by Allah The Omniscient, lets appreciate it and act accordingly. Indeed, Allah the Most Merciful has provided ways for those, especially the young, who strive their best in the way of Islam. Indeed Allah is the best Guider.

Messenger of Allah pbuh relates from his Lord that He said:

”O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another.

O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you. O My servants, all of you are hungry except for those I have fed, so seek food of Me and I shall feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except for those I have clothed, so seek clothing of Me and I shall clothe you. O My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you.

O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and you will not attain benefiting Me so as to benefit Me. O my servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to become as pious as the most pious heart of any one man of you, that would not increase My kingdom in anything. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as wicked as the most wicked heart of any one man of you, that would not decrease My kingdom in anything. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to rise up in one place and make a request of Me, and were I to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have, any more than a needle decreases the sea if put into it.

O My servants, it is but your deeds that I reckon up for you and then recompense you for, so let him who finds good praise Allah, and let him who finds other than that blame no one but himself.” [On the authority of Abu Dharr Al-Ghafari in Sahih Muslim]
